2-Day Furano/Biei Itinerary from Sapporo (With Rental Car)
If you’re flying into New Chitose rather than Asahikawa, Sapporo is a natural starting point for a Furano/Biei winter trip. Here’s a realistic 2-day plan by rental car, based on actual driving times rather than optimistic ones.
Getting There: Sapporo to Furano by Car
The distance is about 115km. Via the expressway (Doo Expressway toward Asahikawa, exiting at Mikasa IC, then roughly another hour and 20 minutes on mountain roads), plan on around 2 hours 10 minutes. Via regular roads only, closer to 2 hours 30 minutes. Expressway tolls from Sapporo to Mikasa run around ¥1,720 (discounted to around ¥1,200 on weekends/holidays with ETC).
One thing worth knowing before you go: after Mikasa, the route runs through a long stretch of mountain road with very few convenience stores, gas stations, or rest stops. Fill up your tank and use the bathroom before you leave the Mikasa area.
Day 1: Sapporo → Furano

Day 2: Biei, Then Back to Sapporo (or Onward to Asahikawa)
Spend the morning in Biei’s snow-covered hills — a quieter, different kind of scenery from the famous summer “patchwork” look. From here you have two realistic options:
- Drive back to Sapporo the same way you came, budgeting the same ~2h10m–2h30m
- Continue to Asahikawa instead (much shorter drive) if you’re flying out of Asahikawa Airport, or want to fit in Asahiyama Zoo’s Penguin Walk before heading home
